Ruben M. Torres Unit

Torres Unit is a medium security prison located in Hondo Texas, part of Medina County.  Torres Unit was consolidated with Ney Unit in 2004 and are now considered a single unit.  The facility is named after Ruben M. Torres, the first Hispanic assigned to the Texas Board of Pardons and Parole.  With a maximum capacity of 1,384 male offenders, the Torres Unit is considered a large prison.  The facility houses inmates ranging from minimum to medium custody (G1, G2 and G4 levels).  Torres Unit is secured by fences topped in razor wire, several security towers, roving patrol, and various electronic detection systems.

Inmates at the Torres Unit can work in a print shop operation, in facility maintenance, in laundry services, and in the unit garden.  Additionally, some inmates can be selected to provide community service for the Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife, providing a supervised labor force for various local government agencies, and work in a local area food bank.  Inmates at Torres Unit are encouraged to take educational classes that will benefit them such as literacy, adult basic education and GED courses.  Vocational training is available and can teach offenders new skills in heating, ventilation and air conditioning, automotive mechanics, and the electrical trades.  Substance abuse education and support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are available to inmates.

Visiting Hours at Torres Unit:

Anyone who wishes to visit an inmate incarcerated at the Torres Unit in Texas must first be on the inmate's approved visitation list.  Torres Unit conducts visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Visits are two hours in duration with the exception of those who arrive to visitation anytime after 3pm (visiting for everyone ends promptly at 5pm).  Visits include contact and non-contact depending on the offender's status, additionally some visiting sessions will be conducted at outdoor tables when conditions permit.  Visitors are allowed to bring a clear sandwich bag with up to twenty dollars in quarters to purchase items from the visiting room vending machines.  Visitor vehicles may be searched at this facility.
