New Jersey State Prison

New Jersey State Prison is located in Trenton New Jersey, part of Mercer County.  It has the distinction of being one of the oldest continuously operating prisons in the United States and was first opened in 1836.  This facility was formerly known as Trenton State Prison.  It is a maximum security institution that houses over 1,860 adult male and female offenders.  At one time New Jersey State Prison was where death row inmates where housed, until legislation in 2007 banned capital punishment in the state.

New Jersey State Prison has had several riots over the span of its operations.  Several infamous murders and serial killers are housed at this facility, including Richard Cottingham who killed six women, Charles Cullen who admitted to killing 35 people, the rapper Max B, and Jesse Timmendequas, who raped and murdered 7 year old Megan Kanka.  The crime led to the legislation of Megan's Law, which has undoubtedly saved countless lives by making public the list of registered sex offenders.
