Mountain View Unit

Mountain View Unit is a maximum security prison for females located in Gatesville Texas, part of Coryell County.  The facility is responsible for housing a maximum of 645 female inmates who vary from classification levels of minimum (G-1) to maximum (G-5).  Additionally, Mountain View Unit houses female death row offender who are awaiting execution.  Death row inmates are housed in single cells separately from the rest of the prison population.

Inmates who participate in work programs are allowed access to a television in their cell (this includes Death Row offenders).  Work opportunities include facility maintenance, working in a braille factory (which translates textbooks into braille using a Perkins Brailler),  and agricultural operations that include working with security horses and canines, farming edible crops, and in the swine finishing process.

Mountain View Unit provides educational programs that teach offenders literacy, adult basic education, and even allow them to earn a GED.  Vocational courses are provided in computer maintenance technician, construction, maintenance, landscaping, and business computer systems.  Mountain view encourages participation in additional service programs that teach life skills, victim awareness, plan for an offenders release and reentry to society, combat alcohol and drug addiction, teach parenting skills, provide religious based studies, and more.  Mountain View Unit has twenty mental health beds on site and provides off site medical and dental services.

Visiting Hours at Mountain View Unit:

Inmates at Mountain View Unit have visitation according to which population they are currently in.  Offenders in the general population and administrative segregation are allowed visits on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Inmates who are on Death Row have visitation on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8am to 5pm, on Tuesdays from 8am to Noon and on Saturdays from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.  Visitors are allowed to bring up to twenty dollars contained in a small clear Ziploc bag to use in the vending machines.  All visitors should contact the facility before they visit to ensure the visiting times have not changed or been canceled for any reason.
