Mike Durfee State Prison

Mike Durfee State Prison is a medium custody prison located in Springfield South Dakota.  Originally a coed facility, this prison now incarcerates male offenders only.  The current capacity of Mike Durfee State Prison is 1,240 inmates.  This facility also oversees the Yankton Minimum Unit, and the Rapid City Minimum Unit.  Mike Durfee State Prison has a disciplinary segregation unit for inmates with behavioral issues.  This prison also offers a long distance parenting program that encourages parent child involvement for inmates.

Inmates at Mike Durfee State Prison are encouraged to take vocational training in auto body repair, horticulture, automotive repair, and welding.  Educational programs include adult basic education, literacy courses and the ability to earn a GED.  Inmates are provided necessary medical, dental, and mental health services during their incarceration, and can also receive substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment.  Correctional industry programs at this facility employ inmates in refurbishing wheelchairs and bicycles, repairing cars, and constructing various products that include visitor center kiosks and camping cabins.

Visiting Hours at Mike Durfee State Prison:

Visitation at Mike Durfee State Prison occurs on Fridays from 6:45pm-8:45pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and State recognized Holidays from 9am-11:15am, 12:45pm-3pm, and 6:45pm-8:45pm.  

This facility is currently part of a video visitation pilot program that allows offenders to have free video visits with approved visitors through Skype.  Video visitation is limited to a duration of 15 minutes and must be scheduled at least one week in advance on Tuesdays between 2:30pm-6:30pm (Central Time) by calling (605)-369-2201 ext. 3003.  Video visits occur Monday-Friday from 8:25am-4pm and on Wednesdays from 5pm-9pm.  Offenders can have up to two video visits each month.  Segregation inmates are not allowed video visits.
