Marianna Federal Correctional Institution

Constructed in 1988, Marianna Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security institution with a local minimum security prison camp.  Located in Marianna of Jackson County, Florida, the prison holds both male and female prisoners among their facilities.  The FCI holds the male prisoners and has a total of 1,065 prisoners.  However, the Camp, which only holds female offenders, has a total of just 166 prisoners.  The institution part of the prison has 5 ordinary housing units for the general population, as well as a Special Housing Unit.  Inmates who are part of the Special Housing Unit are kept separated from the rest of the inmate population. At the Camp, there are 2 housing units where prisoners are housed in dormitory type housing.

To influence inmates to work on self improvement, the facilities offer a variety of programs and educational courses.  The Education Department at FCI Marianna offers courses such as Adult Continuing Education, GED test preparation and testing, Adult Occupational Education, vocational training, release preparation and English as a Second Language.  Other programs include a residential drug abuse program and a sex offender treatment program.  The Residential Drug Abuse Program is a 500 hour program where inmates will be placed in a 180 day residential re-entry center after successfully finishing the program.  As a result of completing the drug abuse program, offenders who have a non-violent history could receive up to a 12 month decrease on their sentence.  The female prisoners who are incarcerated at the satellite prison camp are assigned to work through UNICOR.  UNICOR is run by the Federal Prison Industries.  All behaved inmates are welcome to participate in recreation activities such as crafting, TV time, team sports, and wellness instruction.

At Marianna Federal Correctional Institution, there have been several notable incidents.  Referring back to UNICOR and the factory work it provides inmates with, back in 2012 several officers and inmates filed for a lawsuit against the Federal Bureau of Prisons for UNICOR's computer recycling factory.  Many prisoners at FCI Marianna worked at the factory, however, people who were constantly in this environment were harmed in the long run.  Many suffered from exposure to the toxic chemicals in the air.  The computers being recycled contained harmful substances such as mercury, beryllium, and lead.  The prison factory remained open, however, they improved many of their safety measures.  Some officers and inmates are still skeptical about the UNICOR factory.  Also in 2012, two correction officers were found guilty of smuggling contraband into the facility.  The officers, Steven Smith and Mary Summers, were guilty of sneaking marijuana, tobacco, and cell phones to inmates in return for cash.  Both officers were sentenced to prison.
