Memphis Federal Correctional Institution

Constructed in 1977, Memphis Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security institution and detention center.  The prison also has a minimum security camp located about 30 minutes away from the FCI. The prison can be found in Memphis of Shelby County, Tennessee. The prison was originally designed to hold youthful offenders, however this changed in 1984.  All facilities that are part of Memphis Federal Correctional Institution hold male offenders only.  The FCI and detention center currently has 1,075 inmates while the camp has 283 inmates.  The FCI is designed to hold a maximum of 1,012 inmates with the camp being designed to hold 296 inmates.  The FCI has 5 main housing units that are composed of multiple occupancy cells along with 6 single-person cell housing units.  The FCI also has a Special Housing Unit which is made up of 24 beds.  The satellite camp is made up of 4 open bay dormitory housing units.

Inmates at FCI Memphis are encouraged to participate in education and other self-improving activities.  The Education Department offers courses such as General Education Development, English as a Second Language, Adult Basic Literacy, Adult Continuing Education, vocational training, apprenticeship programs, Advanced Occupational Education, and parenting programs.  Career counseling is also available for prisoners to create a pathway they wish to follow after release.  The Psychology Department runs both a residential and non-residential drug abuse program.  Inmates who have been medically cleared are assigned work.  Work assignments include work in food services, safety, education, recreation, laundry, commissary, health services, and orderlies.  Recreation activities are organized frequently at the facilities as well.  Inmates are encouraged to participate in recreation.  These activities range from team sports, walking, horse shoes, ping pong, crafting, and music.

In 2012, inmates Mark Evans, Vincent West, Tyrone Bryant, David Chambers, and Larry Burse were found to be involved in a marijuana ring that spanned over Tennessee, Louisiana, and Texas.  After a joint investigation between the FBI, Bureau of Prisons, and the Department of Justice Inspector General, it was discovered that Evans was receiving marijuana shipments through the prison kitchen with the help of a corrupt prison kitchen worker.  Evans and the other inmates were intending to sell the marijuana to other inmates.  The operation generated at least $85,000.  All the inmates involved plead guilty.
