Manchester Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security prison with a local minimum security satellite camp. FCI Manchester is located on a 240 acre lot, where approximately 39 of these acres are encompassed by a perimeter fence.  Although construction of the facility began in 1989, the prison didn't open until December of 1992.  Located in Manchester of Clay County, Kentucky, FCI Manchester currently houses 1,117 male offenders.  Out of the 1,117 inmates, 913 are placed within the FCI and 204 at the camp.  The facilities altogether have been designed to hold a total of 1,272 prisoners.  To house the inmates, there are 4 housing units at the FCI and 2 at the Camp.  The housing units at the FCI are divided into double tiered pods with 2 beds in each cell.  Each pod houses 126 prisoners.  There is also a Special Housing Unit at the FCI which is separate from the other 4 general housing units.  The SHU has 47 beds.  The Camp has two separate floors for each housing unit.  Each floor houses 128 prisoners among cubicles, where each cubicle contains 2 beds.
