Gib Lewis Unit

Lewis Unit is a State Prison located in Woodville Texas, part of Tyler County.  The facility houses up to 2,319 male offenders of custody levels that vary from G1 minimum to G5 maximum security.  Over 1,400 inmates are housed in multi occupancy cells.  An additional 376 offenders are housed in an open bay dormitory, and 457 inmates are detained in single cells.

Located on 360 acres of land, Lewis Unit employs many offenders in agricultural operations that include gardening, and raising/caring for security dogs and horses.  Additional internal positions for inmates is provided in a woodworking shop located on the premise, and teaches many offenders carpentry skills.  Some inmates are selected to work outside the facility providing a supervised labor force to surrounding county agencies and to the Habitat for Humanity.

While incarcerated at Lewis Unit offenders are encouraged to take advantage of the many programs offered.  Educational programs at Lewis include literacy, adult basic education and the ability to earn a GED.  Additional courses are provided to teach offenders cognitive intervention and conflict resolution skills, about substance abuse, and provide pre-release programming that prepares inmates for their upcoming discharge date.  Vocational programs available to offenders at Lewis Unit include heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC), cabinetmaking, milling, and electrical systems.

Visiting Hours at Lewis Unit:

Lewis Prison Unit holds visitation for all inmates on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Inmates who are located in the Expansion Cell-Block have visitation by appointment only, contact the facility to schedule a day and time to visit.  Visits are two hours long and can be contact or non-contact depending on your relationship to the offender.  Inmates are only allowed one visit per weekend.  All vehicles must be locked when you park, and all vehicles can be searched (please note if you drive a pickup truck your truck bed must not contain any items and be empty).  For more information on visiting, including what items you can bring read the visiting FAQ and the top of this page.
