Gowanda Correctional Facility

Gowanda Correctional Facility is located in Erie County New York.  It is a medium custody correctional facility that houses adult males.  The current capacity of this prison is 2,300 inmates.  Gowanda Correctional Facility is located directly next to Collins Correctional Facility.  Gowanda has the most inmate grievances filed by inmates of any medium security prison in New York State.  Reports of staff abusing inmates and destroying personal property are rampant, and in 2014 nine inmates attacked three correctional officers.  The violence apparently was targeted at a guard who was known by inmates as "the devil" for his cruel demeanor and constant harassment of offenders, he was beaten unconscious.

Gowanda Correctional Facility offers inmates vocational training in custodial and building maintenance, computer technology, drafting, flooring, electrical, business, horticulture and small engine repair.  Substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment are also available at this institution.

Visiting Hours at Gowanda Correctional Facility:

Visitation for general population inmates is on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-2:30pm.  Visiting follows an odd/even schedule according to the the last digit of the inmate's DIN number.  If the last digit is even (0,2,4,6,8) the inmate will have visiting on even days, if the last digit of the inmate's DIN is odd (1,3,5,7,9) the inmate will have visiting on odd days.  On holidays the odd even schedule does not apply.  Inmates housed in the SHU do not follow the odd/even visiting schedule.  Inmates may have up to three adults and a single child under the age of five visit at one time.
