Englewood Federal Correctional Institution

Englewood Federal Correctional Institution is a prison that consists of 3 different facilities.  Located in Littleton of Jefferson County, Colorado, Englewood Federal Correctional Institution has a low security FCI, a minimum security prison camp, and a detention center.  FCI Englewood carries male offenders, with currently 164 prisoners at the Camp and 889 prisoners at the FCI and FDC.  The facility has been designed to hold up to 1151 inmates.  The prison holds both sentenced and un-sentenced offenders.  FCI Englewood encompasses about 320 acres in total.  The FCI has 2 different housing units with open dormitories and individual rooms, along with a secure housing unit for those who need to be placed in the Special Housing Unit.  The detention center contains 2 housing units where all the prisoners may roam freely.  The Camp is made up of 2 housing units as well.  The housing units at the Camp contain rooms that can hold up to 5 men.  Offenders at FCI Englewood typically range from ages 20 - 86.

Upon a prisoner's arrival, he will be screened by the staff at that prison.  This screening will determine what is best for the inmate by recommending certain programs.  Prisoners are given the opportunity to enter the following programs: Drug Abuse, Drug Education, Non-Residential and Residential Drug Abuse, Sex Offender Management, Sex Offender Treatment, and the Forensic Program.  Englewood also provides services such as reentry services, religious services, computer services, and more.  Education is another option for the prisoners.  There are numerous educational paths the inmates can look into, including Vocational Training, Adult Continuing Education, and Release Preparation.

On April 2nd in 2012, all of FCI Englewood was placed under lockdown due to the discovery of a white, powdery substance enclosed in the envelope of an inmate's mail.  The powder was discovered during the routine screening of inmate mail.  After calling in a hazardous materials team, it was revealed that the substance turned out to be completely harmless. As for notable inmates incarcerated at Englewood Federal Correctional Institution, Rod Blagojevich is currently serving a 14 year sentence at the facility.  Blagojevich, governor of Illinois from 2003 to 2009, was sentenced to prison in 2011 after being convicted of wire fraud,  extortion, and bribery all in attempt to sell Barack Obama's Senate seat. Blagojevich's motives behind attempting to sell the Senate seat vacated by Obama were to gain a higher ranked government position and to receive money.
