Elkton Federal Correctional Institution

Elkton Federal Correctional Institution is a low security prison with a nearby low security satellite prison.  The prison houses around 2,297 male inmates.  The facility is constructed from cement blocks and has a total of 5 housing units.  The federal correctional institution has 3 housing units while the satellite prison has just 2 housing units.  Each unit is composed of a 2 story building with housing on both floors.  FCI Elkton is encompassed by chain link fencing.  Between the FCI and the FSL, there are many programs offered.  The satellite prison has a Sex Offender Management Program and a Non-Residential Drug Abuse Program.  Elkton Federal Correctional Institution also has a Residential Drug Abuse Program.  Narcotics Anonymous is offered at both the parts of Elkton.

In 2010, William J. Platz, a 61 year old prisoner from FCI Elkton was charged for drawing and distributing images of minors involved in forms of sexual conduct.  Platz distributed these images to another inmate. Platz was tried for this a federal grand jury in Cleveland, Ohio.  As a result of his trial, Platz pleaded guilty and was sentenced to Seagoville Federal Correctional Institution to serve additional prison time.  Platz was originally sentenced for a child pornography offense in 2000, along with being a co-conspirator of Eric Rosser.  Rosser happened to be a FBI Ten Most Wanted Fugitive until he was finally captured in 2001.  Another notable inmate who is currently imprisoned at Elkton FCI currently serves a 25 year sentence.  This prisoner, Peter Gotti, was convicted of not only extorting money in 2004, but also planning a murder upon Sammy Gravano.  Peter Gotti was the brother of the John Gotti, who died in 2002.  Once John died, Peter Gotti became the boss of the Gambino crime family.  It was believed that Gotti was after Gravano after Sammy Gravano testified against John Gotti during his 1992 trial.

Visiting Hours at Elkton Federal Correctional Institution:

The federal correctional institution and the satellite camp at FCI Elkton follow the same visiting schedule where visits will be conducted on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays:

  • Weekend and holiday visits will occur from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  Friday visiting hours are from 5:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
  • To determine which inmates are granted visitors each weekend, the facility follows an odd/even register number system.  If the fifth number in an offender's register number is odd, they will be permitted visitors on odd weekends.  If the number is even, the offender can have visitors on even weekends. Any inmate can have visitors on Fridays, regardless of the register number.
  • The prison does not use a point system to track visits.
  • On weekends, visitors will no longer be processed after 8:00 P.M.  On Fridays, visitors should arrive before 2:00 P.M.
  • Visits will be terminated if the visiting area overcrowds.  Visitors who have not traveled far will be the first to leave in order to make room for the "out of town" visitors.
  • Prisoners are allowed no more than 6 visitors at once, including children.
  • Visitors are not permitted to leave money for an offender.  Cell phones, other electronics, food items, and unnecessary medications are prohibited from being brought into the prison.
