Christina Melton Crain Unit

Crain Unit is a mixed custody prison for female offenders located in Gatesville Texas.  Crain Unit was formerly known as Gatesville.  The facility houses a maximum of 1,498 female offenders in the main unit, 288 in the substance abuse unit, and 321 in the Trusty Camp.  Custody levels at Crain Unit range from G1 to G4, which includes minimum to medium inmates.  Crain Unit is also responsible for the intake, processing and classification of female offenders.

Crain Unit operates a agricultural and farming operation that employs select inmates in planting/harvesting crops, and raising/processing swine.  Offenders can receive substance abuse education, life skills and parenting classes, and participate in victim awareness courses.  Academics provided to prisoners include adult basic education, literacy and GED courses.  Vocational training taught to inmates includes carpentry, restaurant management, computer systems, and culinary arts.

Visiting Hours for Crain Unit:

Visitation for inmates at Crain Unit occurs on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am-5pm.  Regular visits are two hours in duration, special visits can be up to four hours in duration but are subject to approval.
