Butner Federal Medical Center

Butner Federal Medical Center is a secured medical facility associated with the Butner Federal Correctional Complex.  FMC Butner, located in Butner of Granville County, North Carolina, currently holds and cares for 919 male offenders.  In 2001, when FMC Butner was originally added to the Butner FCC, the facility was designed to be a 513 bed hospital. The hospital was designed to have additional space for up to 250 inmates from other facilities within the complex.  The institution not only works to treat those with direct medical problems, but inmates who also have behavioral health issues. FMC Butner has an Employee Development Center specifically for employees at the medical center. FMC Butner is also known for having the only program, out of all federal prison facilities, that works to treat sexual offenders.

One of the most notable inmates who attended Butner Federal Medical Center was John Hinckley Jr.  Hinckley was best known for his attempt to assassinate United States President Ronald Reagan. Although Hinckley only inflicted Reagan with a bullet wound, he was still admitted to FMC Butner because he was believed to be driven by insanity.  Hinckley was later released to a psychiatric hospital where he could get the attention he needed for his unstable state of mind.
