Atlanta United States Penitentiary

The United States Penitentiary in Atlanta, referred to as Atlanta USP, is a medium security prison located in Atlanta Georgia, the facility also operates a minimum security satellite camp/detention center.  USP Atlanta houses over 2,200 offenders, 491 at the camp and over 1,700 offenders at the main unit and detention center.  Atlanta USP also operates a 30 bed secure mental health unit.  Inmates located in the minimum security camp help maintain the exterior grounds of the main penitentiary and offer internal support services.

Atlanta USP first opened in 1902 and originally housed high security inmates.  In 2005 the facility changed to house medium security offenders.  The camp opened in the 1980's and houses minimum security inmates in eight dormitories.

Atlanta USP provides offenders with a variety of educational opportunities that include the ability to earn a GED, post-secondary education, take English Second Language courses, and participate in the adult continuing education program.  Inmates who possess a GED may take vocational training programs that teach custodial maintenance, barbering, HVAC, and electrical maintenance.  Additional programs provided at Atlanta USP include parenting courses, and a pre-release preparation program that helps ready an offender for reintroduction into society.

Visiting Hours for Atlanta USP:

All visitors must first be approved and on the inmate's visitors list prior to attending a visitation session.  Visitation at Atlanta USP is conducted on Saturdays, Sundays, and Fridays from 8am to 3pm.  Visits on the weekends use an alternating even/odd visiting schedule based on the fifth digit of the inmate's register number, because of this you should contact the facility prior to your visit to ensure your inmate is allowed visits.  Inmates located in the Camp at Atlanta USP have visitation on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 3pm.  In addition to these visiting times, inmates at Atlanta USP are allowed visits from 8am to 3pm on all Federally recognized holidays.  The facility will stop processing visitors into visitation at 2pm, if you arrive after this time you will not be allowed to enter into visitation.  Inmates are alloted five visits per month.  An inmate can have a maximum of four visitors during a single visiting session.
