Visiting Applications and Rules for Visiting an inmate in an Alaska Prison
The Alaska Department of Corrections encourages friends and family members of inmates to continually communicate with one another be it through the mail, over the phone or in visiting an inmate in person. Before you visit an inmate incarcerated in Alaska there are several things you should know:
- You must have an approved visitors application to visit an inmate in Alaska.
- The Alaska inmate visiting application is not available online, and must be requested directly from the inmate.
- Do not lie on your application as a background check will be performed.
- Inmates can have up to 10 approved visitors on their list.
- Inmates are eligible to receive one hour of visitation per week.
- Visitation is a privilege and inmates with disciplinary actions can have visiting revoked.
- Inmates cannot receive visitors during the initial classification and intake process (up to 30 days, this does not apply for legal visits).
- Legal/Attorney visits are considered a special visit and can happen anytime within the first 24 hours of incarceration, and 8am-10pm daily thereafter.
- All minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
- Inmates who have committed a crime against a child may be ineligible for visitation from a minor.
- The inmate needs to inform you of your visiting application status.
- Every visit requires you to provide a valid photo ID and to sign in upon entry to visitation.
- Minors must provide a valid photo school Id, or birth certificate to visit.
- Your completed visitation application should be mailed back to the inmate.
- You should only bring your ID, and car key to visitation
Dress code for visitors in Alaska
For safety and security reasons, all correctional facilities implement a dress code. It is the responsibility of the visitor to ensure they are in compliance with the dress code, in the event that they are wearing something that violates the rules, they will be denied visitation. In general it is a good idea to bring a change of clothes with you and leave them in your car so that you can get changed if needed.
- Do not wear clothing that closely resembles the inmates uniform (similar colors).
- You may not cover your head in anyway, including hats
- Shoes must be worn at all times during visitation
- Do not wear any uniforms to visitation such as scrubs or military uniform
- Low cut, sheer, see-through or revealing clothing is prohibited
- Men are encouraged to wear sleeved shirts with trousers
- Women may wear slacks/pants or a skirt/dress that does not come up above the knee
- Tube tops, spaghetti straps, and beach clothing is prohibited
- Do not wear anything to revealing or that exposes your midriff, shoulders, chest, or back
- Do not bring a cellular phone with you, it is prohibited
