Marion Correctional Institution is a medium security prison located in Marion Ohio that houses adult males.  In addition to medium custody inmates, minimum security offenders are also housed here.  The current capacity of Marion Correctional Institution stands around 2,550 inmates even though the intended capacity of this prison was only 1,452 inmates.  The racial demographics of this prison are almost half black and half white.  This was the first prison in the nation to host a TEDx event.  This facility is known as having some of the most innovative programs of all institutions and has one of the highest turn out rates for inmates who earn certifications and can gain employment after incarceration.

Some of the most popular programs offered at Marion Correctional Institution are:

  • FYI or Finding Your IT which combines education, recreation and community building events to help inmates gain a better sense of self.
  • Helping Ourselves and Others Pursue Excellence known as HOPE wich focuses on self awareness and self reflection.
  • Life After the Game which is a group program designed to uncover the negative impacts and values of a life of crime.
  • Kairos Torch which is a Christian based retreat combined with a six month mentoring program.
  • Step to the Beat Team which is a rhythm and percussive beats music course that utilizes common items to create sound, similar to "Stomp".

Marion Correctional Institution participates in the correctional industries program operating a wood furniture shop, a metal fabrication shop, and a graphics shop.  Community service programs include a canine program, a wildlife program, a bicycle program, a reptile program, sewing, painting, and crocheting program and more.  Vocational skills taught at Marion Correctional Institution include small engine repair, agriculture, automotive repair, welding, and carpentry.

Visiting Hours at Marion Correctional Institution:

Visiting at Marion Correctional Institution is by appointment only.  You can schedule your visit by calling (740)-382-5781 between 10:30am-12pm or 1:30pm-3pm.  You can also e-mail your request to drc.visitationmci@odrc.state.oh.us include your name, the name of other visitors attending, the date and time you are requesting and the inmate's name and ID number.  Visiting occurs everyday between the hours of 7:45am-3pm.

Marion Correctional Institution also offers video visitation through a company called JPAY.  You must be on the inmates approved visitation list and setup an account through JPAY.  Video visits are 30 minutes in duration and occur everyday from 7:30am-10:30am, 12pm-3:30pm and 5pm-8pm.
