Lopez State Jail is located on three hundred acres in Edinburg Texas.  The facility has a maximum capacity of 1,100 male offenders.  The inmates at Lopez State Jail range from J1 minimum custody to J5 maximum custody.  Additionally, this facility houses minimum custody state prisoners and transient offenders.

Lopez State Jail is co-located with Segovia Unit, and shares many of the agricultural operations that inmates participate in, which includes caring for security dogs and horses, and contract farming.  Inmates at Lopez Unit are housed in one of three dormitories, with 400 beds in J and H buildings.  Z building provides an additional 192 beds, and K building provides 84 beds and a 30 bed segregation unit.  The facility is secured by two razor wire fences with armed patrols.

Lopez State Jail provides classes in adult basic education and allows offenders to earn a GED during their incarceration.  Additionally, inmates are provided vocational training in carpentry, electrical wiring, and culinary arts.  Select inmates provide a supervised labor force to local agencies including the area food bank and the Texas Division of Parks and Wildlife.  Lopez State Jail provides pre-release programming to all offenders who are nearing their discharge date.

Visiting Hours at Lopez State Jail:

Inmates at Lopez State Jail are allowed visitors on Saturdays and Sundays from 8am to 5pm.  Regular visits are two hours long, and limited to once per weekend.  A maximum of two visitors can attend a visiting session (children under 16 do not count towards this number).  Visitors are allowed to bring a clear Ziploc bag with up to twenty dollars in quarters for use in the facilities vending machines.
