James Crabtree Correctional Center

James Crabtree Correctional Center is located in Helena Oklahoma.  It is a medium security prison that houses 1,000 male inmates, 200 of which are minimum custody, the other 800 are medium custody and over the age of 35.  Inmates are housed in open dormitories.  Minimum custody inmates are allowed to work within the institution in supportive roles like facility maintenance, custodial work, food serving/preparation, and farming.  The majority of offenders (72%) at James Crabtree Correctional Center are incarcerated for violent offenses.

Inmates at James Crabtree Correctional Center who have been selected to work in the 15 acre garden will grow and cultivate cucumbers, okra, squash, melons, onions, garlic, and turnips.  The food grown by the offenders is consumed by the offenders as well.  Excess vegetables are frozen to be consumed in the winter months.  Inmates can also work in the surrounding community on public works and road crews.
