Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution

Located in Cumberland of Allegany, Maryland, Cumberland Federal Correctional Institution is a medium security prison with a nearby minimum security satellite camp.  FCI Cumberland holds male prisoners.  The institution had an original maximum capacity of 1,395 inmates.  The facility currently holds 1,283 offenders - 1,039 at the FCI and 244 at the Camp.  The FCI has 9 different housing units. Of these 9, 8 housing units are multiple occupancy, while the last housing unit is the Special Housing Unit.  The Special Housing Unit can hold up to 72 prisoners.  At the Camp, there are 2 buildings containing housing units.  Each of these buildings are 2 stories high.  Unlike the institution, the Camp does not have a Special Housing Unit.

FCI Cumberland offers several courses and programs to prisoners.  Educational courses include Adult Basic Education, General Education Development, English as a Second Language, Adult Continuing Education, and Correctional Learning Network. Not only does the institution have programs for offenders to receive proper education, the facility also has numerous vocational programs along with apprenticeships for their inmates.  Prisoners can take on an apprenticeship in HVAC, plumbing, the culinary arts, landscaping, painting, welding, mechanics, and more.  Courses that have been a help to offenders in the past are the Hope House Book Reading program, parenting classes, and the Father's Camp program.  Both the camp and institution have programs that deal with those who struggle with substance abuse.  The psychology department also provides help to offenders might be struggling with their incarceration.  Overall, FCI Cumberland works to prepare inmates by slowly adapting them to real world concepts.

FCI Cumberland allows prisoners to take advantage of the different services the facility has to offer.  Offenders are exposed to dental services, mental, health, and social services.  These services allow the prison to help inmates when they are in need.  The unique design of the prison allows inmates to shower and do other private needs, such as changing, in a way that works to prevent any incidents between inmates occurring.  Also to the offender's advantage, there is a 4 cell medical unit where inmates will be housed and observed if they have been sexually assaulted, or need protection if they are at risk to be sexually assaulted.
