Part of the Butner Federal Correctional Complex, Butner Low Federal Correctional Institution is a low security male prison located in Butner of Granville County, North Carolina. The institution was added to the Butner Federal Correctional Complex in 1996. The facility currently has 1,262 inmates. Prisoners who are housed here are those who require support and treatment at level three care. 

Offenders at Butner Low Federal Correctional Institution are exposed to several programs beneficial to their health and other needs. The institution offers Substance Abuse programs for those struggling with addiction. Individual and group counseling is available. Inmates who have stayed at FCI-1 and completed their residential substance abuse program will often be transferred to this facility. 

Visiting Hours at Butner Low Federal Correctional Institution:

Visitation at Butner Low Federal Correctional Institution occurs on Sundays, Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.

  • Visitation occurs on Saturdays, Sundays, and federal holidays from 8:30 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  On Mondays, visiting hours will be from 11:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.  For those looking to visit on a Thursday or Friday, visiting will be conducted from 2:30 P.M. to 8:00 P.M.
  • Inmate visitation is tracked using a point system. Each month, an inmate receives 12 points for visitations. Two points will be deducted for weekend visits and one point will be deducted per weekday visit. Visits on holidays do not deduct any points from the inmate's points.
  • Visitors looking to schedule a weekend visit with an inmate who resides in the Vance or Durham unit, can only visit on the first and third weekend of each month. For inmates who are housed in the Granville and Wake can only have weekend visits on the second and fourth weekend of each month.
  • Excluding children, inmates are usually only allowed five visitors at a time.
  • Visits will be terminated if necessary due to overcrowding in the visiting room.
  • Visitors are allowed to bring money into the facility, however the amount of money cannot exceed $20 and must be in coins. Money brought into the facility should be used for vending machines, and may not be given to the inmates.
  • Any permitted items being brought into the facility should be kept in a clear plastic bag.
