Coleman Medium Federal Correctional Institution

Coleman Medium Federal Correctional Institution, located in Sumterville of Sumter County, Florida, is a medium security institution with a nearby prison camp.  The prison itself houses male inmates, while the camp is for female inmates.  The facility has 1,913 inmates total, with 381 female prisoners staying at the minimum security satellite camp and just over 1,500 male offenders residing at the institution.  The medium prison is designed to have a capacity of 1536. The female satellite prison camp can hold up to 512 prisoners.  The set up of the institution is almost identical to the layout of Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution, except for the housing.  At FCI Coleman Medium, offenders are housed in three different four-story buildings.  In total, there are 12 housing units.  Housing units are classified into wings, where each wing has 64 cells.  Cells normally hold two inmates.  The prison camp has one building for housing, which has the same design as a housing building at FCI Coleman Low, where the unit is split into two wings that hold 64 cells each.

Like the other facilities that are part of the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, both the camp and the institution require offenders to involve themselves in educational courses, vocational programs, and work.  Inmates are tested by the education department upon arrival to determine what courses would best suit them.  FCC Coleman requires that their prisoners acquire a GED certificate if they do not already have a high school diploma or GED equivalent.  Academic classes take place on Monday through Friday.  Offenders who do not speak English as their primary language will be able to participate in a class where English will be taught as second language.

Other programs at the institution include parenting programs and apprenticeships.  At FCI Coleman Medium, eight different apprenticeship programs are available to prepare inmates who are interested about learning more about a normal work life.  Elective courses are also available, where inmates may sprout an interest in a certain line of work or art.  Elective courses at Coleman Medium include: horticulture, culinary arts, basic computer training, cosmetology, business education and more.
